Here are a few helpers to make tramming the head easier.
Use a gage block instead of using the table directly. The mill table has T-slots which interrupt the sweep of the indicator. This can throw the indicator settings off . You can take an indicator reading on one side, turn the spindle to the other side and then slide the gage block under the indictor tip.



Another method is to have a flat ground plate available to lay on the mill table. If you get very practiced with tramming you can adjust both axis at the same time using this type of a sweep plate
A piece of flat plate glass is also handy to use as tramming surface. Jeffrey Donahey
The distance from the indicator tip to the spindle center dictates the accuracy of the procedure. It also dictates the degree of skill required to get a zero indicator movement from each sweep. R.S.
