| Assuming that all is secure and appropriate speeds are established, the first grooving cut is next. This is where chatter is most likely to occur. It is important to calculate in advance how deep the cut is to go, and to allow for a finish cut at the diameter of the groove. Assuming that the groove diameter is .500, and the shaft is 1.00 inch, a total of .500 of material is to be removed, (.250 from each side). An appropriate roughing sequence would remove .200 of the total material, leaving .050 for semi-finish and finish operations. |
