Climb cutting

The direction of feed in relationship to cutter rotation that produces cutting forces perpendicular to the the feed direction. Also called "walking".

In a conventional milling machine this produces vibrations and shaking because each cutting flute "hits" the top of the part. Backlash in the lead screw allows the table to jerk fore and aft. However with a CNC milling machine that has recirculating ball screws (instead of acme screws) vibrations and shake are almost non existent.. See also conventional machining.
