The Bill of Material is used to list what materials or other parts are needed to produce the part shown in the blueprint. By associating each individual part to a balloon and arrow on the blueprint it is possible to identify each part with a name, a description, and a material. It gives those in charge of purchasing a "text-blueprint" they can read to make sure everything is available for the manufacturing process. It also give the manufacturer (machinists) sensible guide for process decisions.
